The Transcendental Meditation technique
The most fundamental approach of Vedic medicine is the development of consciousness through the practice of the Transcendental Meditation program. Transcendental Meditation is a simple, effortless mental technique practiced for 15-20 minutes twice a day sitting quietly with the eyes closed, which provides deep rest and eliminates fatigue and stress from the nervous system. During Transcendental Meditation, the mind experiences more abstract levels of awareness as the attention is naturally drawn to the simplest, most balanced state of awareness, pure consciousness.
The technique utilizes a sound without any meaning, a mantra, that progressively becomes more refined as the meditator utilizes it in a specific way, leading his mind to more refined and subtle levels of thought. Ultimately the sound becomes so subtle that thoughts, emotions and perceptions are transcended, and one experiences consciousness without any content, a state of pure wakefulness. The technique enlivens the experience of the Veda in human physiology, the blueprint for growth of consciousness and the physiology.
The holistic development of mind and body resulting from this simple mental technique has been documented by over 600 studies in 120 research institutions around the world. We encourage individuals not practicing the Transcendental Meditation program to learn this technique, either at Lancaster or a TM center located near them. The program is learned in seven steps, each taking about one to two hours and requires instruction with a teacher trained by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi.
