Chronic Hepatitis with edema
A 67 year old male research biochemist was diagnosed on routine blood tests to have chronic hepatitis B in 1993. The date of his infection was not clear, but he works in a biochemistry laboratory and makes frequent trips to developing countries. He felt otherwise asymptomatic and did not continue to see physicians for the condition. In the fall of 1997 he developed the acute onset of ankle and abdominal swelling with malaise and loss of appetite. His liver function tests were markedly elevated, with ALT and AST and alpha-fetoprotein over 300. Because of low platelet counts (50,000) he could not take the standard interferon therapy but tried famcyclovir and lornivudine with no improvement. Over the subsequent 2 months he lost 16 pounds and developed itching due to diuretics. He decided to try the Maharishi Vedic approach to health and came for an out-patient consultation.
The patient was prescribed specific dietary, behavioral and herbal programs. He began feeling better within one week of beginning the herbal programs. At two month follow-up he was asymptomatic. He had regained the lost weight, had normal appetite and no ankle edema. As a result of the latter, he had dramatically decreased the dose of diuretic and had no further itching. The liver function tests and alpha-fetoprotein had returned to normal.
